Summer peeling is common, but it is not a universal schedule

Crape myrtles are one of the few ornamental trees commonly planted in North Carolina that shed their outer bark as a normal part of growth. NC State Extension notes that this shedding is natural and is often noticed during the warm growing season, when the tree is most active.
Seeing loose, curling strips on the trunk or major branches is generally not a cause for alarm.
That said, not every crape myrtle peels on the same schedule or at the same intensity. Exfoliation varies with the cultivar you have planted, the age and size of the tree, local growing conditions, and even how much rain a particular summer brings.
Some trees shed noticeably each year; others may show only modest peeling, or peel more heavily in certain years than in others.

When a crape myrtle sheds its outer layer, what you see underneath is not a special coating the tree produced in response to stress or illness. Think of it as the tree’s equivalent of a snake shedding its skin: the layer underneath was always present, just hidden.

Cultivar matters a great deal here. University of Illinois plant records for Lagerstroemia indica note that some named selections are specifically chosen and marketed for their distinctive exfoliating bark in cinnamon, red, mahogany, or other tones.
If your tree was sold with its bark color as a selling point, the vivid surface you are seeing after peeling is likely exactly what the cultivar was bred to show.
Two ideas worth setting aside: the smooth layer is not proof that the tree is growing unusually fast, and a particular color does not guarantee the tree is completely healthy. The amount of peeling you see and the exact shade of the exposed surface are not reliable health scores.
They tell you the tree is doing what crape myrtles naturally do, and nothing more precise than that.
Judge the whole tree instead of the bark color

Bark color and the amount of peeling you can see from the driveway are genuinely poor substitutes for a full tree checkup. NC State Extension connects summer shedding with active growth and a healthy tree, but that connection is a reassuring general observation, not a diagnostic guarantee.
A crape myrtle can shed bark normally and still have a pest problem, a wound, or a disease working somewhere else on the same plant.

Flowers, when the tree is in season, should appear in normal numbers and size for your cultivar. New growth at branch tips is a good sign.

One of the most practical things you can do when you notice peeling bark on your crape myrtle is simply leave the attached pieces alone. Mississippi State Extension specifically warns against forcibly pulling or peeling bark away, because doing so can expose inner tissue before it has had time to harden and adjust to air exposure.
Even if a strip looks like it is barely hanging on, the tree is better served by letting it fall on its own schedule.
Loose strips that have already landed on the ground around the base of the tree are fine to rake up and remove. There is nothing in fallen bark that needs to stay in place, and tidying the area around the trunk is a reasonable part of ordinary yard maintenance.
What does not belong in that routine is any kind of treatment applied to the bark itself.

Mechanical injury tends to leave ragged edges, exposed pale or green wood, and a wound that does not follow the natural grain of the bark. If you see a continuous band of missing bark circling most or all of the trunk, that is a serious situation called girdling, which cuts off the flow of water and nutrients and can kill the tree.
