Both sexes are compact, roughly the size of a large sparrow, and they carry themselves with an upright, watchful posture on low branches, fence rails, or utility wires.

Older posts, especially round, untreated ones left in place for decades, develop cracks, splits, and hollow sections that bluebirds readily adopt. Insects are the other non-negotiable.
