More often, it comes down to what’s in the feeder and how fresh it is. Getting the recipe right and keeping things clean can make a real difference, and the fix is simpler than most people expect.
Red nectar is not a proven bird repellent

Stir the mixture until the sugar dissolves completely before filling the feeder. Undissolved sugar can settle and ferment faster, so patience here pays off.
Always let the nectar cool to room temperature before pouring it in, since warm liquid can warp some plastic feeders and may speed up spoilage once it’s outside in the heat.
Boiling guidance varies a bit by source. Audubon suggests a brief boil to help dissolve the sugar and reduce initial contamination; Cornell notes that boiling is not strictly necessary for small batches made every day or two.
Either way, boiling does not sterilize the feeder itself and does not eliminate the need for regular cleaning and timely replacement. Any nectar you don’t use right away can be stored in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Leave questionable ingredients out

Honey is probably the most common substitute people reach for, reasoning that it’s natural and therefore better. The problem is that diluted honey creates a hospitable environment for bacteria and fungi.
