Mantises do eat insects, including some that damage vegetables, but they are not the reliable pest-control partners that garden lore makes them out to be.
Knowing what they actually do, and what they do not, helps you make smarter choices for your backyard beds without shooing away a creature that is at least doing no harm.
Let a naturally occurring mantis stay

Make sprays the last resort

If you notice ants moving up and down your vegetable stems, managing them may do more for your aphid problem than anything else.
