Fig trees in Texas and Florida yards need this one cleanup step after the leaves drop, or fungus waits for spring

When your fig tree finally drops its leaves, the yard under it can look like a brown, crunchy carpet. It is tempting to leave that mess for later, especially after a long Southern summer.

But those fallen leaves and shriveled fruit can hold fungus spores, like fig rust, that sit quietly through winter and jump back onto fresh growth in spring. One simple cleanup job now can give your tree a much healthier start next year.

1. Rake and remove every fallen fig leaf and mummified fruit

Picture those orange-brown speckles you saw on fig leaves back in August. That was likely fig rust, a common fungus in humid Texas and Florida yards, and its spores do not vanish when the leaves fall.

They can ride out our mild winters on the ground, waiting for warm, wet spring weather.

Your fix is simple: rake up every leaf under the canopy, plus any shriveled, mummified figs still hanging on branches or lying in the mulch. Bag the debris and send it out with yard waste.

Skip the compost pile, since most home piles do not get hot enough to kill fungal spores reliably.

Next, pull back old mulch if it looks matted or moldy, and lay down a fresh 2 to 3 inch layer, keeping it a few inches away from the trunk. Prune out any dead or crossing twigs while you are there to improve airflow.

Fun fact: figs have grown in the Gulf South since Spanish settlers planted them centuries ago, so this battle is an old one. A clean ground can reduce how much disease shows up next season, though rainy springs may still bring some spots.

Pair cleanup with morning watering at the roots, and your tree has a better shot at glossy, healthy leaves.
