Few things are more frustrating than a blueberry bush that looks perfectly healthy but barely fills a quart basket at harvest time. If your established bushes are putting out thick, leafy growth every spring while your berry count keeps dropping, you are not alone.
The good news is that this pattern has several identifiable causes, and working through them in order can help you figure out what is actually going wrong before you change anything in the ground.
Lush growth signals a diagnosis to investigate, not a single culprit

A blueberry bush covered in dark, healthy-looking leaves while producing almost no fruit is one of the more confusing problems a home gardener can face. Leaves are not the enemy here.
They manufacture the carbohydrates that feed the whole plant, including developing fruit, so a leafy bush is not simply a failed one. What matters is whether the right balance of vegetative growth, flower-bud formation, productive fruiting wood, pollination, and crop load is being maintained across the whole plant.
For an established bush that has gone several years without pruning, one important possibility is that excessive shoot growth and accumulating old or crowded wood have left too little productive fruiting wood to carry a full crop. The same pattern of lush foliage and shrinking harvests can result from soil pH that is too high for good nutrient uptake, too much nitrogen in the fertilizer program, too little sunlight reaching the canopy, drought stress during fruit development, a cultivar poorly matched to your location, weak pollination during bloom, late-spring freeze injury to flowers or young fruit, or birds removing a ripe crop before you get to it.

A soil’s pH can shift over time, especially if a previous owner limed the lawn nearby, if wood ash has been added, or if the planting bed has received amendments intended for vegetables or ornamentals. You cannot reliably judge pH by looking at the leaves.
A soil test through NCDA&CS Agronomic Services measures pH, acidity, and plant-available nutrients and returns specific management guidance for your results. Testing is free in North Carolina from April 1 through November 30 and costs $5 per sample during the December 1 through March 31 peak season.
Before adding any nitrogen, sulfur, lime, or other amendment, wait for those results. A leafy bush should not automatically receive more fertilizer.
NC State’s fertilizing guide for trees and shrubs cautions that excessive nitrogen intensifies shoot growth and can reduce flowering, which is the opposite of what you want. If your bush is already growing vigorously, adding nitrogen without test evidence is likely to push it further in the wrong direction.
Avoid reaching for coffee grounds, pine needles, or mulch as a substitute for tested pH correction. Those materials can help with moisture and temperature management, but extension sources do not support them as dependable or measurable acidifiers for an established planting.
If your test shows pH is too high, follow the rate guidance in the results rather than applying an arbitrary amount of sulfur. NC State’s soil acidity guidance makes clear that overcorrection carries its own risks, and that pH adjustment for an established planting takes time.
Lime, specifically, raises pH and should not be added to a blueberry bed under any normal circumstance.
Prune for renewed fruiting wood, not merely a smaller bush

Winter dormancy is the best time to look honestly at what your blueberry bush is made of. Strip away the mental image of summer foliage and focus on the cane structure underneath.
A well-maintained bush should have a mix of younger productive canes, some medium-aged wood still carrying good fruiting shoots, and very little dead, crossing, or pencil-thin twiggy growth cluttering the center. If what you see instead is a thicket of old gray canes, weak spindly shoots, and branches crossing in every direction, the structure itself may be limiting your harvest.
NC State’s small-fruits handbook describes how matchstick-sized twiggy growth can technically carry flower buds but produces only a few tiny, often low-quality berries. That kind of wood takes up light and space without contributing meaningfully to your harvest.
Renewal pruning addresses this by selectively removing unproductive wood while preserving the younger, vigorous canes that bear most reliably. The process also includes taking out dead or diseased wood, removing canes that grow at very low angles or cross through the center of the plant, and cutting back any cane that has become so old and thick that it is no longer pushing strong new growth.
Opening the center of the plant matters too. A crowded canopy limits light penetration, and blueberry flower buds form on the previous season’s wood, so shaded interior shoots often fail to set buds at all.
Thinning the structure allows more of the plant to do productive work.
Where renewal pruning gets complicated is with flower-bud management. Because buds form on last year’s wood, cutting aggressively removes the current season’s potential crop along with the old canes.

Even an established bush can drop fruit or fail to size it properly during a dry spring or early summer. A two-to-four-inch layer of pine bark, pine needles, or suitable wood-chip mulch over the root zone helps moderate soil temperature and retain moisture through dry spells.
Keep in mind that mulch is a moisture and temperature management tool, not a reliable substitute for a tested pH adjustment.
Plant type and cultivar fit are worth revisiting if the bush has never performed well or if you are not sure what you have. A rabbiteye planted in the North Carolina mountains may not accumulate enough chilling hours to break dormancy properly, while a northern highbush cultivar in the Coastal Plain may struggle with summer heat and low chill requirements. An unsuitable cultivar can produce vigorous leafy growth while delivering consistently poor fruit set, and that pattern can look almost identical to a pruning or fertilizer problem from the outside.
Use the timing of crop loss to investigate bloom problems

Knowing when in the season your berries disappear is one of the most useful diagnostic clues you have. A harvest that fails early, before you ever see swelling fruit, points toward something happening at or before bloom: inadequate pollination, freeze damage to flowers, or weather that kept pollinators away during the short bloom window.
A harvest that seemed to be developing normally and then vanished points toward something happening later, which is a different set of causes covered in the next section.
Blueberry flowers require insect visits for good fruit set. Bees transfer pollen between flowers, and without that activity, even a healthy, well-pruned bush with perfect soil may produce very few berries.

Weather during bloom can also reduce bee activity significantly. Cool, rainy, or unusually windy days keep bees from flying, and an extended stretch of that kind of weather during the blueberry’s relatively brief bloom period can reduce fruit set even when the plant and pollinator situation are otherwise fine.
Bloom timing also affects freeze risk. UGA’s publication on blueberry fruit set and development explains that late spring freezes can damage flowers and developing fruit even when the injury is not immediately visible on the outside of the flower.
Risk depends on local elevation, exposure, cultivar, and how early in the season a particular variety blooms.
Before concluding that a pollination or freeze problem justifies a treatment response, inspect the flowers and developing fruitlets closely during and just after bloom. Protect the pollinators working your bushes rather than treating them as a pest-management problem.
Protect berries after fruit set before judging the plant

A planting that sets fruit successfully can still deliver an empty harvest if something removes the berries between fruit set and your picking day. Birds are the most common cause of this, and they are easy to underestimate.
A small flock of robins, mockingbirds, or cedar waxwings can strip a few blueberry bushes in a matter of hours. NC State’s home garden blueberry publication states that birds can consume the entire crop from a small home planting and identifies netting as the practical solution.
The key detail is timing: netting must go on before the berries begin to ripen and turn blue, not after you notice the damage. Once birds have found the fruit, they will return daily until nothing is left.
Beyond birds, a focused scouting step during and after bloom can catch problems that might otherwise be misread as poor fruit set or fertilizer failure. Gall midge damage, for example, can cause young flower buds to collapse and brown in a way that closely resembles frost injury.
Mummy berry, a fungal disease, causes developing berries to shrivel and drop before ripening. Botrytis and various twig blights can kill flower clusters or young shoots.
Spotted-wing drosophila, a small fly that arrived in North Carolina in recent years, lays eggs inside ripening fruit, causing berries to collapse or ferment on the bush.

Scout first, identify what you are actually dealing with, and then decide whether treatment is warranted and what timing would minimize harm to bees.

Follow a low-risk sequence for the next season

Pulling all of these checks together into a practical order makes the process less overwhelming. Start by identifying what type of blueberry you have and where in North Carolina it is growing.
Rabbiteye, highbush, and southern highbush types each have different needs, and that distinction shapes every other recommendation. Then submit a soil sample through NCDA&CS before the next growing season.

Walk the site and assess sun exposure honestly. If the planting now receives less than half a day of direct sun, that alone may explain a great deal.
During winter dormancy, inspect the cane structure and prune selectively for renewal, removing dead, weak, crossing, and matchstick-thin twiggy wood while preserving the strongest younger canes. Install bird netting before fruit begins to ripen the following summer.
Keep a simple record of whether the failure happens at bloom, during fruit development, or at ripening, because that timing will tell you which category of cause to investigate next.
