The shrub can still appear generally healthy at this stage because scorch typically starts at the margins and tips of leaves, or on the foliage that faces the most sun and wind. Interior leaves and lower, shadier growth may stay green while the exposed edges are already crisping.

Species and cultivar make a real difference, though.
